Visions—Problem Gambling and Video Gaming

PDF | EPUB | Vol. 14, No. 2 (2018)

Problem gambling and problem gaming are gambling or gaming behaviours that negatively impact your life in some way, such as spending more money than you intend at a casino or spending so much time playing games that you fall behind at work or school. For some, problem gambling or gaming can become hard to reduce or stop, and people may experience more serious problems. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders recognizes gambling disorder as a mental illness, and International Classification of Diseases recognizes gaming disorder as a mental illness. In this issue of Visions, we explore problem gambling and gaming, including the underlying role of technology that spans both and the links between substance use and gambling. You’ll find tips and advice for anyone who would like to take a closer look at their own habits, take action to reduce risks of gambling or gaming problems, see what helped others overcome a gambling or gaming problem, and learn where you can go for help if you are concerned about yourself or a loved one.
