But for hundreds of thousands of Canadians, this time of reflection becomes a time of confusion and loss. Some memory loss is a normal part of aging, but when memory loss, difficulty in learning new things, and confusion impact your day-to-day life, it might be a sign of Alzheimer's disease.

On this page:

What is it?

Who does it affect?

Could I have Alzheimer's Disease?

What can I do about it?

Tips for families and loved ones

Where do I go from here?

What is it?

Alzheimer's disease destroys cells in the brain. Nerve cells lose their ability to communicate with each other and nutrients can't reach cells, which makes cells die. Over time, these changes in the brain affect the way you think, remember, act and feel. They also affect the way you communicate with others and the way you move your body. Alzheimer's disease can't be stopped, but treatments may slow the progression of the illness.

Alzheimer's disease is considered a neurocognitive disorder, which is a disease which affects how your brain functions. It is part of a group of diseases called dementia. Dementia itself isn't a disease—it refers to symptoms that can be caused by many different diseases or changes in your body. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, and it accounts for about two-thirds of all dementias.

Alzheimer's disease generally starts slowly. In the early stages, you may notice that you have a hard time remembering information you’ve learned recently. As it progresses, you might:

Feel increasingly confused or disoriented

Forget events or information, usually starting with recent events or information

Forget words, such as forgetting which words to use or having a hard time making sentences that others can understand

Lose interest in your usual activities

Struggle to follow other people's conversations

Find it difficult to complete familiar everyday tasks

Have a hard time making decisions, planning or organizing, or make risky or illogical decisions

Find it harder to control your body's movements

Feel more down or irritable

What are related dementias?

"Related dementias" are illnesses that can look like Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are also grouped together because they're all caused by changes in the brain that can't be stopped. Related dementias include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Top

Who does it affect?

About half a million Canadians live with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. It may be more likely to affect the follow groups of people:

Older adults—The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia increases with age. It affects about 1 in 11 people over the age of 65, but increases to 1 in 3 people over the age of 85.

Women—Women have a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, partly because women live longer than men.

Family members—A rare form of Alzheimer's disease tends to run in families. But in general, genes don't cause Alzheimer's disease&mash;they're only one of many factors that influence your risk of developing it.

People with health conditions—Different health conditions can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. This includes poor cardiovascular health, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Traumatic brain injuries like concussions may be a factor in developing Alzheimer's disease. Health factors like a poor diet, poor sleep, and social isolation may also contribute to Alzheimer's disease.

Environmental factors—There is increasing evidence that there is a relationship between Alzheimer's disease and long-term exposure to chemicals like those found in vehicle exhaust and pesticides.

Top

Could I have Alzheimer's disease?

I often forget about events that happened recently

I find it hard to do day-to-day things like banking or cooking a meal

I have a hard time remembering words or forming sentences

I find it hard to follow conversations or respond to others

I have a hard time making decisions or planning things

I often feel disoriented and can't figure out where I am, even if I've been there before

I often misplace things and find them in strange places

My loved ones have told me that I've been acting differently

My moods change a lot more quickly than they used to

My personality is changing—I often feel withdrawn, suspicious, fearful or confused

I just don't feel like doing things I used to enjoy

It's normal to occasionally forget where you put your keys. With Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, you might forget what keys are for or how to use them. If you notice that some of the signs above are affecting your daily life, talk to your doctor.

Top

What can I do about it?

If you suspect that you might have Alzheimer's disease, or if you suspect that a loved one might have it, it's best to talk to your doctor. Symptoms like poor memory or concentration can also be caused by different mental illnesses or physical health problems. Your doctor can figure out what might be behind your symptoms.

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but treatments can help manage symptoms and help you live well for as long as possible.

Medication—There are several different medications that help reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. There is a lot of research on Alzheimer's disease, and many researchers hope to find a treatment that slows or even prevents Alzheimer's altogether.

Counselling—A mental health practitioner can help you cope with your thoughts and feelings. Different types of therapy can also help you cope with the day-to-day challenges of dementia and help you develop strategies to manage symptoms.

Healthy living—Eating as well as you can, exercising regularly, managing stress, staying connected to your social and support networks, and challenging your mind can help you live well and take control of your health. Some studies show that people with Alzheimer's disease who stay active and connected with their social networks may have better cognitive abilities like learning, thinking, and decision-making than people who are isolated.

Support groups—Support groups, such as groups for people in the early stages, are a great place to meet other people living with Alzheimer's disease. You can learn more about dementia and share new ways to cope. Alzheimer's disease can greatly impact your whole family and caregivers, so family or caregiver support groups are also helpful.

Tips for families and loved ones

Alzheimer' s disease can have a profound impact on the entire family. Here are some tips for family members and loved ones:

Acknowledge your own feelings. It's normal to feel angry, scared, or embarrassed. But if you're having a hard time coping with your feelings, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor or mental health professional.

Learn about what to expect, what treatment options are available and what kind of care your loved one will need. You can also learn strategies to help your loved one live with dignity, such as how to communicate with your loved one.

Reach out for help and advice. Find out what caregiving resources are available in your community. Consider joining a caregiver's support group, and avoid isolating yourself from family and friends.

Prepare for the future. Help your loved one take care of their personal, financial and legal matters while they can still make their own decisions.

Learn how to communicate well with your loved one. People with dementia may be highly attuned to nonverbal communication cues like tone and facial expressions, especially as their language skills decline. Feelings like anger, frustration, or fear have a way of coming though without words, which can cause problems. Taking care of your own well-being and seeking support can help you manage difficult feelings as well as navigate a new way to communicate.

Top

Where do I go from here?

There are a number of resources available in BC for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and their loved ones:

Alzheimer Society of BC

Visit alzheimer.ca/bc/en or call the First Link Dementia Hotline at 1-800-936-6033 for more information and helpful tip sheets about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. When it starts to have a significant impact on our day-to-day lives, it may be dementia, a medical condition currently affecting thousands of people across BC.

Dementia is a broad term for a set of symptoms that includes memory loss, changes in mood and difficulties with thinking, problem solving and language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by disease, most notably Alzheimer’s disease. While many people associate dementia with old age, it is not a natural part of aging and can affect people as young as 40.

Receiving a diagnosis of dementia is life-changing. When people living with the disease and their caregivers and family members have the right information and support, they can better understand the diagnosis and be better equipped to cope with the changes to come. This helps people be as prepared as possible so that they can make health and lifestyle changes that may slow the progression of the disease, live as well as possible and set out legal and financial matters while they can clearly articulate their wishes.

Dementia is a progressive and ultimately terminal illness. The symptoms may seem small at first, but eventually they begin to affect day-to-day life. Dementia impacts each person differently, with symptoms and rate of progression varying from person to person. However, the diseases typically follows a set of stages that coincide with different changes to a person’s abilities:

Early stages: In these stages common symptoms include forgetfulness, difficulty learning new things or following conversations, issues with concentration and rapid changes in mood. These symptoms may seem manageable at first, and often the person can still maintain their independence with support. A person may have insight into their changing abilities and may be able to inform others of their experiences and take steps to plan for the future.

Middle stages: As the disease progresses to the middle stages, people experience a greater decline in their abilities. For many, this is the longest stage. Both the person living with dementia and their caregivers will need help and support. Memory loss will become even more of a challenge. This is the phase when families consider long-term care for the first time.

Late stages: In the later stages of dementia, people often lose their ability to communicate verbally and look after themselves. They will often experience severe memory loss and an inability to recognize time or place. They lose the ability to eat or walk without help. Non-verbal communication—particularly touch—becomes essential. As with anyone living with a terminal illness, it is important that a person with dementia has their physical, emotional and spiritual needs met in a way that reflects their wishes.

Working together to manage dementia

To prepare for the dementia journey, the best thing to do is reach out for support and education. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is committed to ensuring that people living with dementia, their caregivers and families are not alone and have the confidence and skills necessary to live the best life possible. Anyone in BC can connect with The Society to access support groups, fitness programs, education workshops and individual support, available in person and virtually.

The vision of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is of a world without dementia—that vision begins with people living with the disease today being welcomed, acknowledged and included. Working in communities throughout the province, The Society supports, educates and advocates for people with dementia, as well as enabling research into the disease. As part of a national federation, The Society is a leading authority on the disease in Canada.

When The Society connects with a family after someone has received a dementia diagnosis, one of the first things discussed is the value of planning for the future, which is crucial for families due to the nature of the disease. Individuals often have to make decisions around legal and financial matters before they’ve really accepted their situation. Other times, they put off planning until they reach a crisis. By planning early, a person living with dementia can make their wishes known while they’re still able to communicate and avoid having to make decisions under stress or with uncertainty.

Your personal journey

People living with dementia can continue to be active and engaged with the people around them and in their community. While dementia can’t be stopped, lifestyle changes can slow the progression of the illness. Challenging your brain, maintaining a healthy diet and staying active—both physically and socially—can have a tremendous impact. So can being open and honest about what you’re experiencing. Stigma can be a huge barrier for many people on the journey, and being open with people around you not only makes your path easier but can help others also facing it. A diagnosis of dementia does not mean your life is over—many people living with the disease can have positive impacts on their community when they’re given enough support.

If you are concerned about dementia or have received a diagnosis, connect with the Alzheimer Society of B.C. by requesting a referral from your health care provider, or call the First Link® Dementia Helpline at 1-800-936-6033. You will be connected to a staff member who can recommend programs or services that will address your needs, including culturally-specific supports for South Asian and Chinese communities. when it comes to treatments for mental health or substance use problems. To add to the confusion, it isn’t always obvious who is basing their opinions on real evidence and who is not. And while we often hear people talk about evidence-based treatments, it’s also clear that complementary and alternative medicine approaches are helpful for some. In this issue of Visions, we dive into the complicated world of effective treatments: treatments that are common and well-researched, treatments we fear, and treatments outside of mainstream medicine. If you would like to see how a particular treatment might fit with your own recovery, we invite you to talk with your doctor or care team to see if it might be a good option for you.

Background

Editor's Message
(Sarah Hamid-Balma)

Choosing Treatments That Work: What does it mean and why does it matter?
(Lloyd Oppel)

Evidence of Treatment Efficacy: How do we know what isn't so?
(Paul Latimer)

Informed Choices: Evaluating treatment options that work for you
(Stephanie Wilson)

Experiences and Perspectives

Mental Illness and Alcoholism: Odds were against me, but surrender to my higher power brought the help I needed
(Mark Fernandes)

Treatment: A quagmire of approaches and attitudes
(Bob Krzyzewski)

Electroconvulsive Therapy: How it helped me in my battle with depression
(Teri Doerksen)

Sidebar: Is Electroconvulsive Therapy Safe and Effective?
(Ronald Remick)

Alternatives and Approaches

Alcohol Treatments: What does the evidence tell us?
(Chantele Joordens)

Light Therapy: Helping the winter blues and more
(Edwin Tam)

Misunderstood Medications
(Deborah Thompson)

Complementary and Alternative Medicine: A look at some unconventional mental health treatments
(Lloyd Oppel)

Effective Treatments for Mental Disorders in Children and Youth
(Christine Schwartz, Charlotte Waddell, Jen Barican and Dephne Gray-Grant)

Psychotherapy: Choosing an effective treatment
(Karolina Rozworska)

Glossary of Treatments
(Visions staff)

Resources

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 00:32:52 +0000 jen.quan 5296 at https://www.heretohelp.bc.ca Seniors and Depression: The difference between depression and dementia https://www.heretohelp.bc.ca/infosheet/seniors-and-depression-the-difference-between-depression-and-dementia Seniors and Depression: The difference between depression and dementia steph.wilson Fri, 11/08/2013 - While there can be mood changes associated with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, this type of dementia is more of a cognitive disorder rather than a mood disorder like depression. Memory problems can also be associated with depression however so remember only a medical professional like your doctor can correctly diagnose your symptoms.

Top

Risk Factors for Depression

Some people are more likely to experience depression. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “Older women are at a greater risk because women in general are twice as likely as men to become seriously depressed. Biological factors like hormonal changes may make older women more vulnerable. The stresses of maintaining relationships or caring for an ill loved one and children also typically fall more heavily on women, which could contribute to higher rates of depression. Unmarried and widowed individuals as well as those who lack supportive social network also have elevated rates of depression. Conditions such as heart attack, stroke, hip fracture or macular degeneration and procedures such as bypass surgery are known to be associated with the development of depression.”

(Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2013)

Top

Risk Factors for Dementia Diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease

According to the Alzheimer Society of BC some people have increased risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. There are some risk factors that one cannot control like age, gender and genetics and there are risk factors one does have some control over. In terms of age, “In Canada, 1 in 20 people over the age of 65 is affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. For people over 85 years, the likelyhood of having dementia increases to approximately 1 in 4 people.” (Alzheimer Society BC, 2013). Women are more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and if it runs in your family you are even more at risk.

There are risk factors that can be controlled and they include having diabetes, heart problems, and brain injuries. Keeping your body as healthy as possible will reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. If you or your loved one is experiencing some of the above symptoms of either depression or Alzheimer’s disease, please see your doctor.

Top

Find more information

Below are some resources for more information.

Mood Disorders Association of BC www.mdabc.net, 604-873-0103, toll-free 1-855-282-7979

BC Partners for Mental Health and Substance Use Information, www.heretohelp.bc.ca

Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health www.ccsmh.ca, 416-785-2500 ext. 6331

Crisis Centre Seniors’ Distress Line 604-872-1234, www.crisiscentre.bc.ca

Crisis lines aren’t only for people in crisis.
