Supporting Adult Children

PDF | EPUB | Vol. 15, No. 1 (2019)

Providing care to an adult child who experiences a mental illness or substance use problem can be a difficult role to navigate. Parents have to navigate boundaries, independence, and other tricky facets of family relationships as well as health systems that are set up to prioritize the protection of an individual's privacy before the sharing of information with caregivers. Caregiving looks different from family to family, and in this issue you'll find experiences from parents who had to navigate the transition from child and youth to adult services, parents of children who didn't receive a diagnosis until adulthood, parents who found valuable resources, and parents who advocate for their needs. Many caregivers in this issue discuss the important of taking care of their own health, and you'll find information on different resources that care for the caregiver. Caregiving can be an isolating task, and this issue brings light to the work that families do to help each member thrive.
